If you’re in the market for a good pair of horse clippers, you might be trying to weigh your options between buying your own or paying a professional groomer. Horses can be an expensive proposition, so you have to think through each item that your horses will need and whether or not you can do it yourself. Before purchasing a pair of horse clippers, however, there are some considerations you want to make to decide whether or not you really need to own your own pair or just let the professionals handle it.

Part of the goal of whether or not to get horse clippers should be based around if you plan to be doing trimming or whole body grooming. You also want to consider how many horses you will be trimming grooming to know what type to purchase. The first consideration should be the speed of the clippers which are measured by strokes per minute. You want a higher speed for thicker hair such as tales and manes. Higher-speed clippers also work well on longer hair breeds of horses such as Shetlands. Horse clippers come in different speeds such as single, variable and two or three speed clippers.

If you’re only going to be using your horse clippers for trimming needs, then look at purchasing very small, inexpensive trimmers. You would use them for areas around the horse’s ears, eyes, hooves and bridle path. If you’re going to be using your horse clippers for grooming, then you need higher-speed clippers. If you have more than one horse that you plan to be grooming on a regular basis, look into variable speed clippers so it will adjust to your needs depending on the area of the body and which horse you are grooming.

Because you’ll be working in barn areas most of the time, you need to think about whether you want a corded or cordless set of horse clippers. Clippers that have a power pack are often better for these types of jobs because the cord doesn’t get in the way while you are trying to groom the horse. When looking for clippers, you probably want to look for professional grade horse clippers because they have a heavy duty design and can stand long periods of use.
